What you need to know about OrthoIndy’s Spine Robotics Program

This post is part of The Ultimate Guide to Back Pain Relief

Back pain isn’t normal – but you don’t have to suffer. Whether you’re in the first stage of research about your back pain or you’ve already decided to have back surgery, find out how the Mazor X Robotic Guidance System is part of the the latest technological advances in spine surgery.

OrthoIndy Hospital is the first in Indiana to add the Mazor X Robotic Guidance System to its hospital.

What is the Mazor X Robotic Guidance System?

The Mazor X Robotic Guidance System combines pre-operative planning tools and guidance during surgery, giving OrthoIndy spine surgeons advanced spinal surgery options.

“The Mazor X is a tool that does not replace me as a surgeon but rather enhances my ability to safely and reliably perform surgery,” said Dr. Greg Poulter, OrthoIndy spine surgeon. “In addition, it is the promise of future developments that make robotic spine surgery so promising. Further integration of imaging and guidance will allow us new ways to see the spine and perform more complex surgeries through the smallest incisions in ways that have not previously been possible.”

What are the benefits of surgery with the Mazor X?

Hospitals choose the Mazor X System to provide surgeons with pre-operative assessment of a patient and precision during surgery when treating that patient. As spinal surgery has evolved, more focus has been placed on minimally invasive techniques, and this is where the Mazor X System can deliver its greatest technological benefits.

Minimally-invasive surgery has been a major focus in recent years. The OrthoIndy Spine surgeons can use the Mazor X Robotic Guidance System to assist with a number of minimally invasive procedures and complex surgical cases. This means smaller scars and faster recovery time in some cases.

How does it work?

Surgical treatment of the spine requires careful planning and precision, accounting for a patient’s own unique body type. With Mazor X’s 3D planning, your surgeon creates a highly-customized surgical plan prior to entering the operating room.

During the procedure, your surgeon uses mechanical guidance to implement the procedure with exceptional precision based on this customized surgical plan – providing consistent results and optimal outcomes for patients.

Spine surgery can be a scary prospect for a lot of patients. Worries about accuracy, patient outcomes and recovery time are common. Thankfully, when it comes to spine surgery performed with the Mazor X Guidance System, you can rest easy.

Mazor Robotics system is not independent and does not cut or perform any action on your body. Only your surgeon performs the required procedures such as placing implants. Your surgeon is in full control of the system at all times. Also, at any stage, your surgeon can decide to continue without the assistance of the Mazor X.

As Dr. Robert Huler, OrthoIndy spine surgeon mentioned, “Spine robotic surgery does not take away from my human touch and skills, rather this further refines my skills.”

Am I a candidate for surgery?

If you are one of the many that suffer from a debilitating spinal condition or back pain, you may be a candidate for spine surgery with the MazorX System. Surgery with Mazor Robotics technology provides increased safety and precision for a wide variety of spine procedures, and in some cases, allows for minimally-invasive surgery.

“At this time, any patient who is undergoing a back fusion surgery is a candidate to use robotic technology to potentially improve the accuracy of implant placement, which ultimately would improve the safety and outcomes of the surgery,” said Dr. Kevin O’Neill, OrthoIndy spine surgeon.

An OrthoIndy spine surgeon may use the robotic guidance system to perform a number of surgeries, including: Scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, kyphosis and spondylolisthesis.

While many patients are candidates for surgery with Mazor Robotics technology, talk to your physician about all surgical and non-surgical options available to you.

OrthoIndy Hospital has established its reputation as a leader in spine surgery with its advanced technologies and excellence in patient care. The Mazor XRobotic Guidance System helps us to continue our leadership in spine surgery excellence.
