OrthoIndy Foundation’s impact-Jameson, INC.

OrthoIndy News

In 2016 the OrthoIndy Foundation made a grant to Jameson, INC for wellness education at their summer camps.

Jameson, INC mission: Improving the lives of Indiana youth by inspiring them to discover their strengths.

Grant outcomes

OrthoIndy Foundation grant funding supported Jameson’s summer camp Wellness Education program, created in 2016 as a response to growing obesity in children and to support overall wellness. Due to health and economic factors, many of their campers had not previously had the tools, knowledge or opportunity to invest in their own health and wellness.

The funds supported necessary aspects of wellness education programming, such as professional development for program staff, facilities and transportation maintenance and, most significantly, food and health supplies.

Wellness education is woven throughout Jameson’s entire summer camp program, but thanks to the support of donors and grants, they can now offer a week of camp solely dedicated to wellness.

During Wellness Week, campers were educated about the importance of wellness and gained practical skills about how to live healthier lives. Campers also participated in physical wellness and healthy eating programs such as swimming, outdoor education and culinary arts.

After participating in the wellness week, 74 percent of campers reported an increased interest in being physically fit and a renewed commitment to taking care of themselves and their wellbeing.

Impact by the numbers

  • In summer 2017, Jameson served a total of 482 campers and 60 campers specifically during Wellness Week
  • 80 percent of campers qualify for free of reduced lunch
  • 62 percent of campers live with some diagnosis such as ADHD, autism or anxiety
  • 45 hours of physical fitness per week, per camper
