INDIANAPOLIS—OrthoIndy, a leading orthopedic practice specializing in bone, joint, spine, and muscle care, announces a significant leadership transition as Dr. Edward Hellman steps down as president after a four-year tenure marked by growth, innovation and strategic accomplishments. Succeeding him is Dr. Matthew Lavery, a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, who served as vice president under Dr. Hellman and began his term as president on January 27.
Dr. Hellman’s decision to step down as president was initially shared in a personal post on social media, sparking acknowledgment of his impactful contributions to OrthoIndy and the orthopedic community. During his tenure, Dr. Hellman, a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, played a pivotal role in launching PELTO Health Partners, an innovative platform supporting independent physician practices such as OrthoIndy, and co-founded the Indiana Physicians Health Alliance.
He also oversaw OrthoIndy’s expansion across Indiana. Key milestones included the recent announcement of OrthoIndiana, an integrated group that will result from OrthoIndy merging with Tri-State Orthopaedics and Fort Wayne Orthopedics to deliver patient-centered, advanced orthopedic care across the state. Additionally, the practice announced alignments with Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center and the Lafayette Orthopedic Clinic and opened new facilities in Brownsburg and Westfield.
“Through Dr. Hellman’s strategic leadership, we’ve achieved growth and taken significant steps to maintain and strengthen our role as an independent practice and enhance care for patients,” said John Ryan, CEO of OrthoIndy. “We are grateful for his contributions.”
Since joining OrthoIndy in 1999, Dr. Hellman has earned numerous Indianapolis Monthly Top Doctor honors, delivered many presentations and authored articles on advanced joint replacement techniques. While no longer serving as president of the practice, he will continue seeing patients until he retires in March.
Dr. Hellman reflected on his decades of service to OrthoIndy and its patients: “Leading OrthoIndy has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to plan strategically for the future while continuing to serve our patients and work with a dedicated team. I look forward to seeing the practice continue to thrive under Dr. Lavery’s leadership.”
Dr. Matthew Lavery is a highly respected orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician who has built a career focused on advancing orthopedic care and working with athletes at all levels, from high school to professional sports. In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Lavery is a published researcher. He has also devoted more than a decade to the operational success of OrthoIndy through service on numerous committees and its board of directors.
“It is an honor to succeed Dr. Hellman in leading OrthoIndy, a practice that has helped set the standard for exceptional orthopedic care in Indiana,” said Dr. Lavery. “My immediate goals are to ensure our new and existing partnerships are the strongest they can be, promote innovative technologies, and elevate patient outcomes as we build on OrthoIndy’s legacy of excellence.”
Dr. Lavery assumes leadership as OrthoIndy continues to enhance its position as an independent practice dedicated to patient-centered care.
“Dr. Lavery’s deep expertise and commitment make him an ideal leader to guide us into our next chapter,” said CEO Ryan. “We look forward to his leadership in advancing orthopedic care across Indiana and beyond.”
