Corrective Bunion Procedures Provide OrthoIndy Patient with New Life

Foot and Ankle | Patient Stories

Over the course of several years, Myrna Melchior lived with severe bunions on both of her feet.

What started as mild discomfort gradually became constant pain that affected nearly every part of her day. Walking was difficult, standing was exhausting and even the activities she loved – golfing, walking her dog and working as a server at the local golf course clubhouse – were no longer possible.

“A previous foot surgery with a podiatrist a decade earlier had not gone according to plan,” said Myrna. “My condition continued to worsen, and eventually the pain became completely unbearable.”

This time, Myrna knew she wanted the highest level of care she could find.

Choosing Trusted Expertise

Myrna came to OrthoIndy to see Dr. Stephen Greenfield, a choice that would ultimately change her life.

Her appointment with Dr. Greenfield confirmed what she had been living with for years: severe bunions on both feet that had progressed significantly. A prior surgeon removed both second toes as she was told she was not a candidate for a more involved surgery. However, her big toes continued to shift beneath her remaining smaller toes.

Even though Myrna believed her situation looked bleak, Dr. Greenfield explained that he could provide a permanent solution by stabilizing her big toes with plates and screws that would correct the structural issues in both feet.

After years of dealing with pain, she finally felt hopeful.

A Permanent Solution

Myrna’s treatment plan with OrthoIndy was straightforward and carefully staged. She underwent her first foot surgery in December 2024 and her second in March 2025. Both procedures went as planned.

“When I asked Dr. Greenfield about returning to golf, he told me I could go back once it felt comfortable,” said Myrna. “I was so pleased to hear that. And before long, I was playing again!”

Returning to the Life She Missed

Today, Myrna’s life looks very different from what it was before surgery. She walks comfortably, stays active and exercises regularly with others. The burning pain in her feet that once defined her days is gone.

Myrna’s positive experience with OrthoIndy extended beyond the operating room. From the professionalism of the staff to the attentive post-operative care from Zoey Johnson, PA, she felt supported at every step.

“Looking back, I wish I had pursued treatment earlier,” said Myrna. “But after waiting nearly ten years, I finally found the solution I had been looking for thanks to OrthoIndy.”

Today, Myrna is doing what she set out to do from the beginning: walking normally, living actively and moving forward without foot pain.
