OrthoIndy Foundation’s impact-The Children’s TherAplay Foundation

OrthoIndy News

In 2016 the OrthoIndy Foundation made a grant to the Children’s TherAplay Foundation for their training and facility remodeling.

Children’s TherAplay Foundation’s mission: To provide children with special needs a foundation for developing life skills through innovative therapies, including equine-assisted physical and occupational therapies, in a safe and caring environment.

Grant outcomes

Children’s TherAplay used a portion of the grant to remodel therapy space and additional areas to accommodate new therapists and support staff. The expansion included sensory integration tools for physical therapy patients and has become a favorite space in the clinic to play.

It is also utilized for WalkAide–a revolutionary new medical device that leverages functional electrical simulation (FES) to improve the walking ability of children living with foot drop. WalkAide can help patients who exhibit foot drop due to brain or spinal diseases, or trauma such as brain injury or cerebral palsy.

Children’s TherAplay used another portion of the grant to support continuing education for physical and occupational therapists through the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA). AHA serves as a major source of information, promotes best practices and provides the certification for therapists with a high level of knowledge and experience.

Children’s TherAplay is committed to the AHA core values of integrity, accountability, accessibility, innovation, excellence and collaboration. Four occupational therapists and two physical therapists benefited from AHA Level 1 educational opportunities, and Children’s TherAplay was chosen to host an AHA level 2 course in October 2016 in which sixteen therapists were trained on-site. Professional development expenses significantly reduce when hosted locally.

Impact by the numbers

Children’s TherAplay

  • Now sees over 150 physical and occupational therapy patients yearly
  • Saw an increase of 15 to 20 children from the previous year
  • Can see six more patients per hour with the new space
