OrthoIndy Foundation is celebrating over $10 million in grants to organizations throughout the state who make a significant impact in the health, mobility and overall well-being of individuals and their communities. These are some of their stories.
Nestled in the heart of Pike Township, the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA stands as a beacon of hope and support for veterans and their families, and anyone seeking a welcoming community. From its humble beginnings as an express location within a strip mall, formerly known as Pike YMCA, this innovative veteran-centric YMCA has evolved into a vital center of holistic well-being, nurturing the spirit, mind, and body of every individual it serves. As the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA commemorates its fifth year of service, it serves as a testament to the enduring influence of community, compassion, and collaboration.
Guided by Christian principles, the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA is committed to serving all individuals regardless of their circumstances or background. As a non-profit organization, the Y relies on donations to ensure that YMCA membership and programs are accessible to all. Since its establishment in 2018, the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA has doubled its community reach, serving over 13,300 individuals, with 3,198 receiving financial assistance through the YMCA Membership for All program in 2023. Remarkably, OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA served over 500 veterans or active-duty military members and their families this year, a significant increase from just 141 in 2018, underscoring its commitment to inclusivity and support. This significant growth demonstrates the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA’s steadfast commitment to its mission and its ability to adapt to the evolving needs of the community it serves.
At the heart of the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA’s success lies its collaborative partnerships, particularly with the OrthoIndy Foundation, which played a pivotal role in bringing this YMCA center to fruition. Through this partnership, the Y has expanded its services beyond conventional boundaries, notably by hosting the nation’s first YMCA with an onsite Veteran Health Clinic. Initially expecting approximately 500 monthly appointments, the clinic quickly encountered a surge in demand, leading to a substantial increase. With over 11,000 appointments annually, the clinic has become a lifeline for many veterans, offering comprehensive care tailored to their unique needs.
The profound impact of these partnerships is perhaps best illustrated by the story of a mother who sought help for her veteran son struggling with severe mental illness. Encountering the Veteran Health Clinic sign at the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA, she turned to the center for assistance. Despite the clinic not specializing in mental health services, the collaborative efforts between the YMCA and the Veteran Health Clinic ensured that her son received the support he urgently needed. This heartfelt story serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative influence of compassionate care and collaboration within the community.
As we reflect on the remarkable journey of the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA over the past five years, we are reminded of the enduring power of community, compassion, and collaboration. Let us ensure that its legacy of compassion and service endures for generations to come, shaping a brighter and more hopeful tomorrow for all. Together, let us continue to strive for a healthier, more equitable, and more connected community—one where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, heal, and find belonging.
