Greg Burton’s relationship with OrthoIndy began long before he ever began considering joint replacement.
In 2017, while managing ongoing knee issues, Greg learned about a meniscus research study OrthoIndy was conducting. Having previously received care elsewhere with varying results, he decided to try something different and enrolled in the study. Over the next three years, Greg took part in the study and saw encouraging results with temporary knee injections.
Going Back to OrthoIndy
Several years after the study, problems began developing in his other knee. As an avid runner, the progression of pain was especially frustrating for Greg. By 2023, it had worsened to the point that he returned to OrthoIndy for further evaluation.
Greg saw orthopedic surgeon Dr. Troy Roberson, who initially recommended non-operative treatments. When those options provided limited relief, Dr. Roberson performed a knee scope and additional imaging, then referred Greg to OrthoIndy total joint surgeon Dr. Philip Huang later that same day.
Just an hour-and-a-half after his appointment at OrthoIndy at Ascension St. Vincent Carmel with Dr. Roberson, Greg arrived at the OrthoIndy Westfield location to meet Dr. Huang. What happened next left a lasting impression.
“Dr. Huang had already reviewed my history, notes and imaging,” recalled Greg. “He arrived fully prepared for the visit, and I was very impressed.” Greg felt seen, understood and confident that he was in expert hands.
Motivation and Surgery
The imaging had shown that Greg had very little meniscus remaining in his right knee. Based on his activity level and long-term goals, Dr. Huang recommended a partial knee replacement.
Greg didn’t need to think twice about his decision to move forward with surgery. As a runner of more than 30 years, his priority was getting back to running safely and without pain.
Each January, Greg Burton travels to Orlando, Florida, to take part in the renowned Disney Goofy Challenge – a demanding event that tests endurance and determination. The challenge consists of running a half marathon, immediately followed by a full marathon the next day.
Greg wanted to continue doing this in the future. So, in January 2025, he underwent surgery at OrthoIndy Northwest Hospital. Three days later, he began his recovery at OrthoIndy Westfield Physical Therapy, committing fully to his recovery plan through March 2025.
Performance Improvement and Outlook
Today, Greg says he is feeling great. After his recent one-year follow-up appointment, he reflected on just how far he had come.
“This past January (2026), I completed the Disney Goofy Challenge marathons, finishing three hours faster than the previous year,” said Greg. “I owe this incredible performance to my partial knee replacement!”
Beyond running, Greg also said he is looking forward to enjoying camping and exploring Indiana state parks with his wife, with a goal of visiting every park together in the future.
Reflecting on his care at OrthoIndy, Greg describes his experience with Dr. Philip Huang as “top notch.” From the efficiency of his appointments to the expertise and coordination of the entire care team, he felt cared for at every step.
“Dr. Huang and everyone at OrthoIndy have been fantastic,” said Greg. “People should know how much they can truly help. When it is time for more care in the future, I know where I am going.”
