Dive deeper into orthopedics

OrthoIndy News

Orthopedics is a branch of medicine that deals with the correction of deformities of muscles and bones. However, there is much more to orthopedics than the definition. We thought we would dive deeper into the practice of orthopedics by keeping it short and sweet with interesting facts about orthopedics.

Orthopedics is a highly competitive field

In the United States, there are about 650 residency programs available for med students who want to pursue a career in orthopedics. In most programs it is extremely competitive to get accepted.

Most orthopedic surgeons are over 40

Orthopedic doctors are an aging population. Only 15 percent of orthopedic physicians are under 40. The average age of a part-time orthopedic specialist is 66.

Arthritis affects people of all ages

Arthritis is inflammation in one or more of your joints. Hip and knee arthritis are common conditions many orthopedic specialists see in their patients. Nearly 40 million Americans have arthritis.

Less-invasive surgery is on the rise

New technologies, devices, instruments and related advances in navigation, robotics and bone substitutes will lead to less-invasive and more physiologic surgical interventions. OrthoIndy recently installed the Mazor X Robotic Guidance System to ensure greater precision and smaller incisions.

Orthopedic physicians treat patients of all ages

Typically, orthopedic surgeons treat children, athletes, teenagers, adults and the elderly. Orthopedic physicians treat conditions that range from bone and joint disorders and fractures to tears of the muscles, ligaments and tendons in all areas of the body.

Back pain, arthritic hips and knees, sports injuries and tears in the muscles, are just a few of the musculoskeletal conditions that impact Americans on a daily basis. OrthoIndy physicians are here to help get you back to normal.
